Matt Devine
5/8 Steel Rods (Commissioned)
Matt Devine is a self-taught sculptor working with steel, aluminum and bronze. Born and raised in Salem, Massachusetts, Devine moved to San Diego in 1995 where he learned how to weld and fabricate metal with his father. The juxtaposition of heavy metals that appears lite as paper address Devine’s desire to contain chaos and push out the discord of an overly saturated culture of information.
This piece can be found at 3661 Valley Centre Drive, 2nd floor Lobby.
Matthew Alexis
Yellow Citadel, 2012
Matthew Alexis is well known for his experimentation and utilization of non-traditional painting techniques. Each painting seems to hearken the viewer to ask questions about the physical makeup of the painted surface, wherein actuality paint is the only element in his work. The dimensional paint in his work is characterized by the use of copious amounts of paint, which rise off the flat picture plane, in the form of “paint ribbons.” With paint physically rising up off the canvas, a true third dimension is achieved and the paint takes on a structural as well as expressive quality.
This piece can be found at 3721 Valley Centre Drive, 1st floor lobby.
